chitin \ˈkī-tən\ noun: a horny polysaccharide (C8H13NO5)n that forms part of the hard outer integument especially of insects, arachnids and crustaceans (chitinous \ˈkī-tən-əs, ˈkīt-nəs\ adjective)
Etymology: French chitine, from Greek chitōn
